A Company Founded on a CAN DO Attitude
In 1944, Wisconsin federal cheese inspector John Figi began sharing Wisconsin cheese gifts with customers across America. He conceived the idea of sending Wisconsin's finest cheese through the mail. He started out by sending 1500 postcards out and received 43 initial orders. John and his wife Ann would sort orders, cut 200 one-pound wheels and 70 one-pound blocks of cheese on their kitchen table, sealing the cheese in cellophane heated on the stove and penciled in the delivery addresses. John would then borrow the neighbor's red coaster wagon to deliver the cheese to the post office because they didn't have a car.
From this humble start, a $100 million+ company was built.
